Where do I set my subwoofer's crossover point?
- First off, if you have an LFE (Low Frequency Effects) out of
your receiver and an LFE In on your subwoofer and make that connection
(recommended) then the crossover point will be handled automatically by
the receiver. (Read the point below and you are done).
- Secondly, if your audio receiver is capable of such a
thing set
all of your speakers to the "small" setting.
- Even if you have
relatively large speakers, the subwoofer is better equipped for low
frequency.
- Lastly, set the knob at the 80 Hz point and make small
incremental adjustments from there.
- Go lower if you have a large set of main (left and right) speakers.
- Go higher if you have a small set of main (left and right) speakers.
The crossover, as the name implies, tells the subwoofer when to start
playing. As the bass sound gets lower it should smoothly
transition
from your main speakers to your subwoofer with out any indication that
it has happened. If the setting is too low you will hear a gap in
a low frequency transition. In other words, the sound will go
lower and lower then suddenly stop only to be picked up again as it
continues. If the setting is too high then you will hear the bass
surge at a certain point and then seemingly go away. In other
words, the sound gives you a punch at a certain point but then gets
noticeably weaker as it continues downward.
